Linda Becker introduced teenagers Sam Kangas & Ben Kayekjian. They are doing a project on the 1st guide dog user Morris Frank. This is a national contest – Taking a stand in history – discrimination of blind people. Linda invited them to the meeting so they could talk to guide dog users to help with their project.
VP Kathy Blake had everyone introduce themselves. Guide dog handlers introduced their guides and told how having a guide dog had enriched their lives.
Kathy Zuorski presented the Treasurer’s Report. We have $2,036.41 in our GDB account and $398 in petty cash. Total balance is $2,580.41.
Not reflective in above totals but voted on and will do are: designated funds for harness +350. Designated funds for San Rafael dedication wall $1,000.
Refreshment donations added to petty cash totaled $78.00 (March 25th meeting).
Linda told the members about our new location come May, July, & September. A thank you was given to Melissa for speaking to Pastor Tye McClain for letting us use the Orangewood Ave. Baptist Church 3 miles south of Braille Institute.
Since this is the last year of Linda’s presidency, new chapter board leadership for president and vice president is being asked to step forward. President and Vice President need to be voted on at the May meeting.
Carla and Cynthia will continue in their roles as VP and treasurer.
Linda introduced Dr, Rebecca Kammer, optometrist, low vision specialist, teacher, and optical engineer. She works not only with problems of the eyes, but she considers the needs of the whole visually impaired patient. She provides the best correction for the eyes but also takes into consideration the individual’s contrast sensitivity and range of visual field.
Dr. Kammer has worked on many clinical trials. The present study envolves RP stem cell research (phase 2B clinical trial) at UCI, UCLA, and UC Davis. She helped develop a walking maze test to evaluate improvement of sight with the patients in the study. She asked for people with RP to volunteer to take the test so they can help them evaluate the validity of the results.
Dr. Kammer has a heart for the “left out” Albinos in Tanzania. She has been there many times to help them, not only with their vision, but with discrimination because of their condition.
Dr. Kammer was thanked for her presentation and agreed to answer questions.
Our next meeting will be held on Saturday, May 20 and will be held at the Orangewood Ave. Baptist Church- 8421 Orangewood Ave, Garden Grove 92841
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 12:00 pm
