Estee introduced herself as our new President and also introduced her new board: Paula Pinheiro as Vice President, Cynthia Thacker as Treasurer, and Carla Ross as Secretary. Estee asked Linda Becker and Kathy Blake as outgoing President and Vice President to come up for gifts. Linda thanked everyone (including our volunteers Kathy Zuorski and Melissa Nabulsi, ex-president Richard King, and benefactor Sandy Dubin) with a gift for their involvement. The outgoing board gave both Linda and Kathy personalized gifts for their service.
Treasurer’s Report: Cynthia Thacker reported that we have $423.75 in petty cash and $1,126.41 in our regular account, for a total of $1,550.16. We had previously sent $1,000 to GDB in San Rafael for an OC Guide Dogs tile for their Wall of Fame.
Estee reminded member of our donation box on the back table. Suggested donation is $2 for meeting refreshments. She also reminded us of the OC Guide Dogs website and thanked Mary Ann Epstein for her part in keeping it current.
Estee also acknowledged Nancy and Len Joseph for snacks. Nancy reported on just receiving Azura back as a retired guide. Nancy had raised her as a puppy.
Next we honored new guide dog teams: Valerie Alcaraz with “Gravity,” Sarah Brazer with “Fabiana,” and Jeff Senge with “Waldorf.” They each got a small welcome gift.
Paula Pinheiro led introductions next. A few of our member shared some funny Keith Tomlinson stories and expressed their appreciation of him.
Scott Quinlan presented our club with a check for $350 from the Lions Club and thanked everyone who entered the raffle. That money will buy a harness for a new graduate, identity to be determined.
Estee thanked Sandy Dubin for her continued support with a watercolor portrait of her dog Reese painted by our own Melissa Nabulsi. Sandy continually donates money to our chapter from her pet evaluation business.
Our speaker was Keith Tomlinson. Our alumni group is one of the largest he has seen, and said we are lucky to have such committed members. The big news is what’s going on at the GDB campus with the new puppy center. The new neonatal center is a $20 Million renovation which will provide an optimum environment for puppies, hopefully creating a higher success rate of guide dogs. He spoke a bit about dog behavior – that they are very food motivated. Reward plenty at first, and the reward can eventually delayed. He also spoke about the hug – have a moment after a stressful situation. He also said the secret is getting the right dog to the right person. We have a great network of raisers in Orange County. He expressed appreciation for our donation to the Wall of Fame at GDB.
We can get brochures of the new center by calling GDB at 800-295-4050.
Keith also spoke about technology for independent mobility, technology for restored vision, and great advancement in GPS. Check out Neopaws for dog boots for hot pavement. You can use Tincture of Benzoin available at pharmacy. It goes on the paw in liquid form and provides a thin coating/barrier for paws. Also Musher’s Secret is a product to toughen paw pads. Ruff Wear makes bootliners which provide extra protection.
If you are looking for Apps for visually impaired, check with the computer person at Braille. Check out “Nearby Explore” App.
GDB is not using the “Follow” command as the dog might follow the wrong person.
We thanked Keith for his time with a card and a $25 Amazon gift card.
Estee announced that our next meeting will be on September 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and will be a barbecue to honor our members.
A question was raised about transportation at the November anniversary in SF for GDB: Theresa Stern will send out emails regarding transportation to and from the airport and around the city.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 11:50 a.m.
