OC Guide Dogs
January 28, 2017
The January 2017 meeting of OC Guide Dogs was held at Anaheim Christian Reformed Church and was called to order at 9:30 a.m. by President Linda Becker.
Those present were as follows:
Larry & Annie Funk
Katherine & Stephanie Amoukteh
Denise Quinn from CCI
Debbie & Bob Paul
Mary Ann Epstein
Puppies to Partners Raising Club
Linda Becker thanked our volunteers Cynthia Thacker, Carla Ross, Kathy Zuorski, Melissa Nabulsi, and Elaine Willis. We welcomed new member Rebecca Mendez to the group with her guide “Cora.”
Linda introduced Scott Quinlan and his guide “Irish.” Scott has been making BBQ sauce and meat rubs and selling them with the profits going to GDB. He asked a representative of Puppies to Partners to come up and accept a check for $500 in appreciation of their hard work. He also presented OC Guide Dogs with a check for $350. Scott was thanked for his generous donations. His sauces go for $8 per jar, rubs are $5 per jar, or a set of any three for $20. His Lions Club is raffling off a stay at the Welk Resort in Escondido. Tickets are $10 each. The condo sleeps eight people. Raffle will be held on May 21st. For more information, check our website.
Kathy Blake facilitated introductions around the room.
Treasurer Cynthia Thacker presented the Treasurer’s Report. We have $2,236.41 in our GDB account and $380 in petty cash. Minor funds went out for some housekeeping charges, leaving a balance of $2,580.41. We collected $54 today for refreshments.
Linda presented us with an opportunity for donation to GDB. GDB is breaking ground soon for a state of the art Puppy Center on their San Rafael campus. The Puppy Center will be a way for the puppies to learn and be familiar with all the sights and sounds they may encounter as new guides. Linda would like our chapter recognized as a donor in the form of a plaque. The cost is $1,000. Wording on the plaque is to be determined, but it at least should say OC Guide Dogs and a date. If members want to donate directly (if you are GDA graduate or other), you can go directly to the website to do that personally. Discussion ensued and questions were asked and answered.
MOTION: Kathy Blake moved that we donate $1,000 of our GDB Alumni Treasury to go towards a plaque.
SECONDED: Scott Quinlan seconded the motion.
Motion passed unanimously.
Linda has been researching possible meeting locations since the church has raised its prices. The current cost of renting the church is $100. The March meeting will be held at the Braille Institute in the cafeteria, and an email reminder will be sent. The Braille Institute will soon be under construction and they will be using the church for many of its classes. We could drop our November meeting and resume in January. Ada Dellarso offered the Springdale Baptist Church in Westminster. Richard King has information on another meeting place and will talk to Linda after meeting.
Linda introduced Denise Quinn from Canine Companions for Independence. Denise spoke about her role and the role of service dogs from her organization. Their dogs go to kids with autism, wheelchair bound people, people with disabilities, hearing impaired, etc. They also supply Facility Dogs and are starting to work with the government for supplying dogs to Vets with PTSD. The dogs are given out free of charge. Discussion commenced about fake service dogs and a few questions were asked. A service dog has to be (1) helping with a disability; and (2) trained to do a task.
Denise was thanked for her presentation.
Paula Pinheiro told us that GDB has 75th anniversary gear for sale on their website.
Our next meeting will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2017, and will be held at the Braille Institute. Our speaker will be Dr. Rebecca Kamer, a low vision specialist from UCI.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 11:15 a.m.
